Ashley Judd: Weinstein Verdict Overturned, Accuser Speaks Out

Landmark Case in #MeToo Movement

Actress and Activist Challenges Appeal Decision

American actress and political activist Ashley Judd has expressed her outrage over the recent overturning of Harvey Weinstein's 2020 rape conviction. In an interview with CNN, Judd, who was one of the first women to publicly accuse Weinstein of sexual misconduct, called the decision a "travesty of justice."

Weinstein, a former Hollywood producer, was sentenced to 23 years in prison after being found guilty of rape and sexual assault in 2020. However, the New York Court of Appeals overturned the verdict in August 2023, citing errors in the jury selection process. Weinstein is set to be released from prison pending a new trial.

Judd, who has been an outspoken advocate for survivors of sexual assault, said she is "profoundly disappointed" by the decision. She argued that the overturning of Weinstein's conviction sends a dangerous message to victims and perpetrators alike.

"It undermines the progress we have made in holding powerful men accountable for their actions," Judd said. "It sends a message that sexual violence will not be tolerated, even when the accused is wealthy and influential."

Judd's comments come amid a growing chorus of voices condemning the decision to overturn Weinstein's conviction. Many advocates for victims of sexual assault see it as a setback in the fight against sexual violence and a erosion of trust in the justice system.
